Veteran Australian television reporter Tim Stoney has died at the age of 58 following a battle with cancer.

The broadcaster reportedly died on Saturday, just weeks after his wife, former ABC news presenter Mary Gearin, shared a public message about his declining health and invited friends and colleagues to offer words of support. At the same time, he was still able to read them.

The couple share two children, daughter Maggie and son Patrick.

According to the Herald Sun, Stoney began his journalism career as a cadet with the paper in 1996, laying the foundations for a career defined by versatility across news and sport.

He later spent three years at Network Ten before moving to SBS World News Australia, where he covered both news and sport for a further four years.

Across those roles, Stoney built a reputation as a thoughtful and committed reporter, respected by colleagues for his professionalism and depth of knowledge.

In a Facebook post shared prior to his death, Gearin paid tribute to her husband’s personal and professional life, describing him as “the absolute best father his kids could ask for” and a man with wide-ranging passions.

“A lover of words and wit and debate and travel and history and politics and sport and jazz and whiskey,” she wrote.

She also highlighted his commitment to family and community, describing him as “fiercely loyal” and deeply engaged in his children’s sporting lives.

“Fate is dealing a beyond-cruel card that could see this big fella leave a 6’5” hole in our hearts within a few weeks, but this post is to celebrate him while he’s here,” Gearin said at the time.
