Australian actor Josh Heuston says joining the international ensemble cast of Prime Video’s hit new series “Off Campus” felt surprisingly effortless – even if he occasionally found himself translating himself on set.

Speaking to Variety Australia in Sydney on Tuesday night, Heuston reflected on the experience of playing musician Justin Kohl in the hugely popular adaptation, comparing the environment to working on Australian productions like “Heartbreak High,” where he played Dustin ‘Dusty’ Reid.

“Yes and no,” Heuston said when asked whether being the “token Aussie” on the cast felt noticeably different. “Like in a lot of ways, yeah. Sometimes I don’t understand what I’m saying – but I also mumble a lot, so there’s a bit of that.”

The actor said he quickly bonded with the cast, who embraced both his personality and distinctly Australian slang: “I fit in really well with that cast. They love the Australianisms and it was just very easy, just effortless, that entire show.”

Heuston also addressed speculation around whether fans can expect Justin to return for the show’s second season, suggesting that – at least for now – the character’s story is over. “At this stage, no,” he said. “We’ll see. Everything from scheduling to storylines to books… there’s a lot of stories to show in this particular series.”

He added that the production is ultimately focused on remaining faithful to Elle Kennedy’s hugely popular novels, which inspired the adaptation. “You’ve got to stay true to Elle Kennedy’s books and let that rock,” he said.

“Off Campus” is now streaming on Prime Video.
