Netflix Acquires ‘aka Charlie Sheen’ Doc, Chronicling the Star’s Journey From Winning to Losing, Then Surviving

Charlie Sheen

WINNING. Netflix has acquired the two-part documentary film “aka Charlie Sheen,” which chronicles the star’s struggle with fame — leading to his infamous 2011 firing from “Two and a Half Men” — followed by his path to sobriety. The film will launch Sept. 10 on the streamer, which also shared key art and a trailer (scroll down to watch below).

Having tempered his tiger blood ways, Sheen opens up for the documentary, which also speaks to family, friends and cast members including Denise Richards, Heidi Fleiss, Jon Cryer, Sean Penn, Ramon Estevez, Brooke Mueller, Chris Tucker and even Sheen’s drug dealer Marco. Sheen has been on a bit of a redemption tour for sometime, having since patched things up with “Two and a Half Men” exec producer Chuck Lorre — and even appearing in Lorre’s “Bookie.”

Andrew Renzi, whose “Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?” was a hit for Netflix in 2022, is the director and producer on “aka Charlie Sheen.” Other producers include Charles Roven, Nick Boak, Madison Weireter, Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, Jordan Wynn, Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard and Talin P. Middleton, while executive producers are Richard Lichter, Toby Emmerich, Michael Minahan and Vivian Johnson Rogowski.

Here’s the logline for the doc: “Tabloid black hole Charlie Sheen knows what’s been said about him, and he’s finally ready to confess. ‘aka Charlie Sheen’ tracks his upbringing in Malibu to his effortless rise to megastardom — and dramatic fall, all within the public eye. With a stunning clarity earned through seven years of sobriety, Sheen openly speaks about the subjects and events he’s never discussed publicly before. Through extraordinarily candid interviews with his family, friends, and cast members, the most outrageous moments of Sheen’s life are revisited with raw emotion and exceptional warmth, painting a portrait of a flawed man whose penchant for self-destruction is ultimately no match for the ferocious love and forgiveness he inspires in those closest to him.”

Skydance, North of Now, Boardwalk Pictures and Atlas Independent are the production companies attached to the project. Renzi’s other credits include “Paul American,” “ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing” and “The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For.”
