Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Aziz Ansari‘s directorial debut “Good Fortune.”
Written, directed, produced, executive produced by and starring Ansari, “Good Fortune” follows Gabriel (Keanu Reeves), a well-meaning but inept angel who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen). Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer also star.
“Keke is a delight to work with,” said Ansari in a previous statement. “I’m so happy she’s a part of our cast and even more excited to provide a quote for this press release announcing her casting.”
The film, which marks Ansari’s feature directorial debut following his stint as the star and creator of Netflix’s “Master of None,” is produced by Ansari, Anthony Katagas and Alan Yang, with Ansari Christopher Woodrow, Connor DiGregorio and Jonathan McCoy executive producing. Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey oversee the film for Lionsgate, with Dan Freedman, Phil Strina, John Biondo and Matt Leonetti having negotiated the deal for the studio.
“Good Fortune” is a Garam Films, Oh Brudder, Keep Your Head, and Yang Pictures production, presented by Lionsgate in association with Media Capital Technologies. Ansari’s feature directorial debut was initially slated for 2022 under the title “Being Mortal,” but the film fell through at Searchlight Pictures after then-star Bill Murray was accused of sexually harassing a young female crew member.
Rogen and Palmer were both attached to star in “Being Mortal,” which was based on Atul Gawande’s 2014 book of the same name. In 2022, Palmer told Variety that the film would need “a major rewrite” to be completed without Murray, but that “if somebody could figure it out, it’s Aziz.”
