John Rambo,” a prequel in the long-running action franchise, will hit theatres this year.

Lionsgate has slated the film for June 4, 2027. It’s scheduled to debut just ahead of Disney’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” (May 28) and a few weeks before Sony’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” (June 11) and the Warner Bros. “Oceans” prequel (June 25).

“John Rambo” serves as an origin story, taking place before the events 1982’s “First Blood,” the Sylvester Stallone-led action adventure that ignited the franchise. Sequels include 1985’s “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” 1988’s “Rambo III,” 2008’s “Rambo” and 2019’s “Rambo: Last Blood.” The series revolves around a United States Army Special Forces veteran, whose Vietnam War experience traumatized him but also gave him superior military skills. He uses those abilities to fight corrupt police officers, enemy troops and drug cartels.

Noah Centineo is taking over as the Stallone character, and he’ll star alongside David Harbour as Major Trautman as well as Yao and James Franco in unknown roles. The cast also includes Jason Tobin (“A Thousand Blows”), Quincy Isaiah (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Jefferson White (“Yellowstone”) and Tayme Thapthimthong (“The White Lotus”).

Jalmari Helander (“Sisu”) directed “John Rambo” from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Producers include Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco. Executive producers are Sylvester Stallone, Anthony & Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk.

Lionsgate’s slate in 2027 includes “Day Drinker” starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz; Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” and “The Housemaid’s Secret.” Later this year, the studio will release “The Fall 2” and “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.”
