Channel 10’s revival of “Big Brother” Australia kicked off on Sunday night (November 9th), marking the broadcaster’s biggest reality launch of the year.
Hosted by Mel Tracina, a Nova announcer and cultural correspondent on “The Cheap Seats,” the format is going back to its roots with live nominations, live evictions, and 24/7 live streaming from Dreamworld.
“Big Brother” ran on Channel 10 from 2001 to 2008, before it made the move to Channel Nine for three seasons from 2012 to 2014. In 2020, the Seven Network revived “Big Brother” as part of then-CEO James Warburton’s revamp of the network’s content slate, and ran it for three seasons.
While the series has kicked off various media careers, including Chrissie Swan in 2003 and Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald in 2004, this year’s edition actively sought out contestant who do not have large social media followings or media backgrounds, returning the focus to “ordinary people” with “real jobs.”
Sunday night saw “Big Brother” welcome 12 new housemates from every corner of the nation. And Australians are being given more say than ever before this year, getting to decide which housemate will round out the baker’s dozen.
