It’s the fifth international production since the show first moonwalked onto Broadway in 2022, joining acclaimed stagings in London, Germany and across the US. Melbourne’s theatre crowd is next in line to experience what many are calling the most electrifying musical of the year.
MJ is brought to Australia by local producer Michael Cassel, working alongside the Broadway originals Lia Vollack, John Branca and John McClain. The Sydney premiere in March drew roaring applause and not one, but three standing ovations – two of them mid-show.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible response to MJ,” says Vollack. “The energy, the passion, the standing ovations night after night – we’re thrilled MJ will call Melbourne home next.”
Michael Cassel adds: “MJ is an electrifying theatrical experience that has been embraced by Australian audiences – from the roaring ovations to the electric word-of-mouth. We can’t wait to bring that magic to Melbourne and fill Her Majesty’s Theatre with the music, movement and spirit of Michael Jackson. This production is a true celebration of one of the greatest entertainers of all time, brought to life by a world-class, award-winning cast and creative team.
“We’re thrilled to share this extraordinary show with one of the most passionate theatre communities in the country – and to leave Melbourne audiences on their feet night after night.”
Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon OBE, and penned by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lynn Nottage, MJ offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the “Dangerous” World Tour, diving deep into the artistry and ambition of Michael Jackson.
The soundtrack features over 25 iconic hits including “Beat It”, “Smooth Criminal”, “Man in the Mirror” and “Thriller”.
A certified crowd-puller, MJ has been seen by more than a million people since opening on Broadway and continues to wow audiences around the globe.
