“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has made its final lap around the universe and will hit Peacock on July 30.
Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic and Pierre Leduc, the film became the highest-grossing movies of the year so far and crossed $1 billion at the global box office earlier this month. The trio also directed the franchise’s first film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which sat at No. 2 in 2023 worldwide box office numbers, second only to Warner Bros.’ “Barbie.”
Returning cast members include Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser) and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad). There were also several new additions, with the introduction of Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud and Benny Safdie as Bowser Junior.
In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri detail the working relationship between the two companies and how that synergy has led to ongoing success. On why “Super Mario Galaxy” was ultimately the Mario franchise being used as the foundation for the film, Miyamoto says that it “clicked as a key to creating the next movie.” It allowed the team to show a “different side” and “type” of Mario while also presenting the opportunity to create a new galaxy with both “potential” and “appeal.” Meledandri cites one of his own goals as getting audiences into theaters, stating that “the promise of creating Nintendo’s world of space felt like an irresistible invitation for audiences to go ‘Ah, I want to see how they are going to fill up that giant screen with Nintendo’s vision of space.’”
While a third movie has yet to be confirmed, the sequel’s end-credits scene, which introduces the fan-favorite character Daisy, certainly leaves the door open.
