A24’s late addition to the 2025 box office has been making a name for itself without touching Australian theatres, yet. But now theatregoers in Sydney and Melbourne have a very special chance to see “Marty Supreme” in a supreme format: 70mm, in select Sydney and Melbourne theatres in late January.
“Marty Supreme” is a frenetic comedy of errors directed by Josh Safdie (“Uncut Gems”) and stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream to make it big in professional table tennis. A simple enough premise, but it’s being hailed as one of the best films of the last year. Variety’s Peter Debruge praised Chalamet especially in his review, saying “in the defining performance of his still-burgeoning career, Timothée Chalamet — aka “Marty Supreme” — makes you want to believe in this instantly iconic character”.
Chalamet, who just won Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards for his performance in “Marty Supreme”, elevated his status as an actor through a mix of blockbusters such as “Dune” and indie favourites such as “Call Me By Your Name,” “Lady Bird” and “Little Women.” With “Marty Supreme,” Variety’s Rebecca Rubin said Chalamet is “the kind of actor whose name alone can sell a movie ticket”.
Co-written with Ronald Bronstein, “Marty Supreme” also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Luke Manley, and Koto Kawaguchi.
Two-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Darius Khondji, who collaborated with Safdie on “Uncut Gems,” shot “Marty Supreme” in 35mm with Arriflex cameras and vintage anamorphic lenses. This limited 70mm release makes “Marty Supreme” Safdie’s first release in the 70mm format, and expands the film into a more immersive theatre experience than the original imagery can offer.
Attendees of the 70mm screenings, which are taking place at Ritz Cinemas and Astor Theatre from January 22, will also receive limited-edition “Marty Supreme” posters and Official “Marty Supreme” Championship Table Tennis Balls to take home.
