“Toy Story 5” has dominated the Australian box office, debuting at the top with close to $10 million.
The Disney film brought in $9.81 million in its opening weekend (Thursday, June 18th-Sunday, June 21st), wiping out all competition. Globally, the film scored the year’s biggest debut with a sensational tally of US$312 million.
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the fifth instalment follows Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the gang of anthropomorphic toys as their owner Bonnie becomes addicted to her new favourite gadget, a kiddie smart tablet known as Lilypad. If that crew wasn’t enough pedigree, Taylor Swift wrote a new song, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” for the soundtrack.
“Obsession” was a distant second with $2.07 million, followed by Universal’s “Disclosure Day” with $1.79 million. The sixth “Scary Movie” sat in fourth, grossing $798,000, followed by A24’s “Backrooms” with $781,000.
“Michael” has continued to sit comfortably in the box office, now in its ninth week with a further $460,000 grossed, followed by Sony’s “Masters of the Universe” – starring Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes – which brought in $403,000.
“Leviticus” grossed $331,000 in its first week, followed by “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” with $258,000, and “Cocktail 2,” also in its first week, with $244,000. “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “The Sheep Detectives,” and “Colony” rounded out the top ten with $219,000, $186,000, and $141,000 respectively.
The overall top 20 grossed a total of $18.06 million for the weekend.
