The official White House TikTok account posted a patriotic video of President Donald Trump and his administration — not unusual, except it was largely based on and soundtracked by Taylor Swift’s No. 1 hit, “The Fate of Ophelia.”
The president has been publicly anti-Swift in the past, posting on Truth Social earlier this summer: “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” His negative commentary started shortly after Swift endorsed Kamala Harris in September during the 2024 presidential election.
At that point, Swift had already called out Trump for previously using a fake image of her to make it appear that she was endorsing him instead. Trump warned that Swift’s music sales would suffer due to her endorsement, although that proved to be false.
Trump’s last public comment about Swift came after she and NFL star Travis Kelce announced their engagement. Trump called Kelce a “great player” and Swift a “terrific person.”
“Well, I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump said in August. “He’s a great player, and I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”
In her endorsement of Harris, Swift wrote that the former vice president “fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Responding to Variety‘s request for comment, a White House official replied: “We made this video because we knew fake news media brands like Variety would breathlessly amplify them. Congrats, you got played.”
