Amy Madigan bursts into a witch-like cackle as she accepted the Oscar for best supporting actress on Sunday night.
Amy Madigan won the award for her performance as the parasitic witch Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s mystery horror film “Weapons.”
“This is great! I mean, everybody is asking me in the press, well, it’s been 40 years, and, you know, what’s different about this time? What’s different is this little gold guy,” Madigan said on stage. “I mean, I was in the shower last night trying to think of something to say as I was shaving my legs. Now, when I got pants on, I don’t have to worry about that. Sorry. And, you know, we were kind of advised that, you know, don’t say all these names because nobody knows who the hell these people are, but you’re not rattling them off. They’re people that mean something to you, that you couldn’t be here without them.”
Madigan was previously nominated in 1986 for the Oscar for supporting actress for the drama “Twice in a Lifetime,” and her nomination this year set a record for the longest gap between nominations. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for “Weapons.”
The best supporting actress included two nominees from “Sentimental Value”: Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. Their fellow nominees included Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners”) and Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”).
The 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second consecutive year, took place on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. “Sinners” led this year’s film nominations with a record-breaking 16 nods. Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller was followed closely behind by Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” with 13 nominations. Both films were nominated for best picture at the 2026 Academy Awards, along with “Frankenstein,” “Bugonia,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sentimental Value,” “Train Dreams,” “F1” and “The Secret Agent.”
