Independent production powerhouse A24 has today released the figures from the Australian opening weekend of “Marty Supreme,” the award-winning drama from director Josh Safdie and star Timothée Chalamet. Since its local release, which coincided nicely with the January long weekend, “Marty Supreme” grossed over $4.1 million AUD (a figure including preview screenings), making it A24’s biggest film release in Australia ever.

There’s a cocktail for this success. Award season buzz often helps drive films to successful January releases in Australia, and “Marty Supreme” has already bagged a Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Chalamet’s performance and nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

Add that to the aforementioned long weekend opening and its star-studded cast, and it’s plain to see how Marty Mauser is reigning supreme in the No. 1 Australian box office ranking at the time of writing. These returns add to a global return of $120.8M USD at the global box office, making “Marty Supreme” A24’s third most successful film yet.

“Marty Supreme” is directed by Josh Safdie (“Uncut Gems”) and co-written with Ronald Bronstein (“Uncut Gems”). The film stars Timothée Chalamet (“Dune”), Gwyneth Paltrow (“The Politician”), Odessa A’zion (“I Love LA”), Kevin O’Leary (“Shark Tank”), Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler the Creator), Abel Ferrara (“The Projectionist), Fran Drescher (“The Nanny”), Luke Manley, and Koto Kawaguchi.

Variety’s Peter Debruge said in his review, “it’s both mesmerizing and maddening to watch this arrogant table-tennis prodigy ricochet from high to low for nearly two and a half hours. In the defining performance of his still-burgeoning career, Timothée Chalamet — aka “Marty Supreme” — makes you want to believe in this instantly iconic character too … even if sometimes you also want to strangle him.”

“Marty Supreme” is screening in theatres now, with limited 70mm screenings available in Sydney and Melbourne. A24 has confirmed the film will come to IMAX later this week, bringing it to a total of 269 screens in Australia.
