For a title released in 2013, “Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag” has had significant staying power. Many fans hold it as one of the top entries in the 31-entry franchise, which just released its latest title — “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” in March 2025. But the conversation has quickly moved on to an ongoing storm of rumours of a remake for the series’ fourth main title.

The 2013 entry was, at the time of its release, the franchise’s most expansive game yet. Swapping the historic city settings of its predecessors, “Black Flag” put players in control of Edward Kenway, a young pirate captain and assassin-in-training who commanded a ship of rogues in the early 18th century Caribbean Sea, when privateering and piracy were at a peak.

The rumours of a remake began in 2023, when Kotaku reported that Ubisoft Singapore was in early-stage development of a remake for the game. Things accelerated in 2024 when Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that “some remakes” were underway for the “Assassin’s” series. Fans were quick to assume that “Black Flag” was one of them.

The most recent developments came in June, as initially reported by Insider Gaming when “Assassin’s Creed” collectible creators Pure Arts let slip in a livestream while explaining the absence of Kenway from their collection: “So there’s going to be something going on with Edward, and our PVC 1/8th scale statue will reflect that accordingly.”

Then, it was seemingly set in stone last week after a comment from Matt Ryan, who voiced Kenway, while appearing at Chicago’s Nightmare Weekend convention. While signing merchandise, Ryan asked if the fan had finished the game. When he replied yes, Ryan rather teasingly responded, “Well, you might have to beat it again.”

The fan laughs, replying that they intend to revisit multiple titles. To that, Ryan smiled and replied knowingly, “Well especially this one. There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.”

A day later, the Assassin’s Creed France X account posted a video of the game with a caption that translates to “mentally I am here.” By now, it’s hard to deny the evidence that a remake for current-gen consoles is in development, but Ubisoft has yet to make any official confirmation.

That situation is unlikely to change soon, given the ongoing post-launch development of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” as a “Black Flag” remake could draw significant interest away from the current-gen title. If all else fails, “Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag” is still available for purchase on Xbox, PlayStation 3 and 4 and PC.
