Netflix’s “Extraction 3,” starring Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani, has begun production on the New South Wales South Coast.
The latest instalment in the action franchise is expected to create 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to the state’s screen industry and broader economy. Filming will take place across the South Coast and Sydney over the coming months.
Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two “Extraction” films, returns to helm the third chapter from a screenplay by “Citadel” and “Tyrant” writer David Weil.
“We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our ‘Extraction’ saga here in New South Wales,” Hargrave said. “Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with ‘Extraction 3,’ we’re taking our biggest swing yet.”
Hemsworth will reprise his role as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake, with plot details for the third film remaining under wraps. The franchise is based on the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks, from a story by Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, with illustrations by Fernando León González.
“Extraction 3” is produced by AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco and Ari Costa; Wild State’s Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson; along with Hargrave, Patrick Newall, Eric Gitter and Peter Schwerin. Steven V. Scavelli and Shelby Malone serve as executive producers.
Newall said the production had received support from federal and state government representatives, the Port Authority of NSW and Screen NSW.

“We have had tremendous cooperation from Minister Burke, Peter Ernst, Head of Regional Ports, Port Authority NSW, Jason Potkins Director, Screen Incentive Sections at The Office of the Arts,” Newall said. “We’ve also had help at every turn from Minister Paul Scully, MP Allison Burns, and Minister John Graham, as well as Screen New South Wales. This is a big movie and these invaluable partners have all helped make our production here possible.”
The production is supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund, administered by Screen NSW. Established in 2020, the fund is intended to attract high-end television and feature film productions to the state.
NSW Minister of the Arts John Graham welcomed the production and its cast and crew to the state.

Netflix’s APAC Director of Production Policy, Debra Richards, said government support remained important to developing Australia’s screen workforce and production capacity.

The original “Extraction” debuted on Netflix in 2020 and became one of the streaming platform’s biggest film releases at the time. It was followed by “Extraction 2” in 2023, with both films appearing on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films List.
