Merging the worlds of elite athletics and Hollywood filmmaking, soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo and acclaimed director Matthew Vaughn have kicked off UR•Marv, a joint venture film studio.
The independent studio aims to disrupt conventional filmmaking by “embracing innovative technology, with a nod to tradition.” The partnership has already yielded tangible results, with two completed action films – which Vaugh and Ronaldo financed and produced together via UR•Marv – and a third in active development, all part of the same series. Details of the first film will be unveiled imminently.
“This is an exciting chapter for me, as I look ahead to new ventures in business,” Ronaldo said.
“Cristiano has created stories on the pitch that I could never have written, and I look forward to creating inspiring movies with him – he’s a real-life superhero,” Vaughn added.
Vaughn, the British filmmaker renowned for his stylish and kinetic storytelling, has carved a distinctive niche in the action genre. His directorial portfolio boasts titles like “Layer Cake” (2004), “Kick-Ass” (2010), and “X-Men: First Class (2011), each reflecting his penchant for blending sharp wit with visceral action. In 2014, Vaughn vaulted into the pop culture stratosphere with the “Kingsman” franchise, a sharply tailored blend of espionage satire and operatic violence. Through his production company Marv, Vaughn has carved out a self-sustaining creative sandbox, producing not just his own films but launching spin-offs and cross-platform expansions. In 2024, Vaughn helmed “Argylle,” a spy thriller featuring an ensemble cast including Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard. There are two more films in the “Kingsman” franchise in the works.
Ronaldo, the Portuguese soccer icon, has adeptly expanded his brand beyond the pitch, establishing a formidable presence in the media landscape. In October 2023, he became a key investor in Medialivre (formerly Cofina Media), a leading Portuguese media conglomerate that owns prominent outlets such as Correio da Manhã and Record. Demonstrating his digital savvy, Ronaldo launched his YouTube channel, “UR Cristiano,” in August 2024. The channel offers fans an intimate glimpse into his life through a variety of content, including personal insights and challenges. This strategic move into media ventures underscores Ronaldo’s ambition to solidify his influence in the entertainment industry, ensuring his brand’s longevity well beyond his soccer career.
