The news that “Neighbours” is being axed again has sparked a renewed call for local content quotas on streaming services. Producer Fremantle announced that the iconic Australian soap would be coming to an end after Amazon decided not to commission another season.

The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) expressed its shock over the decision, highlighting the significance of the show to Australia’s screen industry.

“’Neighbours’ has provided steady work to generations of performers and crew and is an integral part of Australia’s screen industry infrastructure,” said MEAA Acting Chief Executive Adam Portelli.

“Today’s news is stark example of why the federal government needs to act now and implement local content quotas on streaming services to provide certainty for the Australian screen industry.”

Portelli added that Australian stories shouldn’t be subject to the whims of massive multinational corporations like Amazon, Netflix, or Apple.

“MEAA will be seeking urgent clarification from Fremantle about the future of the production,” he said. “Workers should be treated with respect – and certainly don’t deserve to find out through the media they’ve been sacked.”

The cancellation comes just two years after Amazon revived the show in 2022, following its initial cancellation when Channel 5 in the UK pulled the plug. Despite strong viewership, including its first-ever Daytime Emmy nomination in 2024, “Neighbours” will conclude in December 2025—just in time for its 40th anniversary.

While it’s already cemented its place in television history with over 9,000 episodes, 63 weddings, 20 births, and 68 deaths, its end highlights a bigger issue for Australian entertainment. Portelli stressed the need to curb the influence of global giants like Amazon, Netflix, and Apple, arguing that Australian stories deserve more protection.

Even though the last episode won’t air until late 2025, fans are already reflecting on the show’s impact, which launched the careers of stars like Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe, and Chris Hemsworth.
