A new Australian-led comedy series fronted by Sam Campbell (“Taskmaster,” “Last One Laughing”) and Aaron Chen (“Fisk,” “Guy Montgomery’s Guy-Mont Spelling Bee”) is headed to HBO Max Australia, with “Make That Movie” confirmed to premiere exclusively on the streamer in May.
The six-episode series, created by Campbell, follows a chaotic, high-concept premise: a self-assured filmmaker travels across the country searching for everyday people with ideas for feature films, before attempting to bring those ideas to life in just three days.
Campbell stars as the fast-talking director at the centre of the experiment, leading a small crew tasked with pulling off the near-impossible turnaround.
Chen co-stars as Sebastian, an intimacy coordinator within the fictional production team, alongside a supporting cast that includes Lara Ricote (“Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping,” “Break Clause”) as runner Jess, Helen Bauer (“Am I Being Unreasonable?”) as sound engineer Pat, and David Hargreaves (“This Country”) as cinematographer Winnie.
Behind the camera, the project is directed by Joe Pelling, best known for “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared,” and produced by Blink Industries, whose credits include “Dead End: Paranormal Park”.
The series was originally commissioned by Channel 4, with Charlie Perkins, Head of Comedy, and Joe Hullait, Commissioning Executive, overseeing the project. Executive producers include Adam Tandy, James Stevenson Bretton, Campbell and Pelling, with William Kay producing. BBC Studios is handling global sales.
“Make That Movie” marks another international-facing project for Campbell following his breakout success in the UK comedy circuit, and continues Chen’s steady rise across Australian and British screens.
