Tim Burton’s beloved “Edward Scissorhands” is coming to life later this year, with an in concert live to film performance by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Released in 1990 and directed by Burton (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), the film centres on Edward (played by Johnny Depp), a gentle artificial man with scissors for hands.

Orphaned and unfinished by his creator (Vincent Price in his final role), Edward longs for connection and is coaxed into joining the town’s pastel suburban community. At first a sensation amidst the uniformity, his uniqueness eventually sparks jealousy and suspicion among the neighbours. Along the way, Edward develops a tender romance with Kim (played by Winona Ryder).

“Edward Scissorhands” is celebrated for its poignant exploration of acceptance, enduring love, and the challenges of being misunderstood.

Under the direction of conductor Nicholas Buc, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will play live in concert to the film, beautifully bringing to life composer Danny Elfman’s ethereal, emotive score – which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television.

The performances will take place over the Halloween weekend on Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st, 2026, at Melbourne Arts Centre’s Hamer Hall. Tickets will go on sale at 10am on Thursday, April 16th – see here for details.

“Edward Scissorhands” is the latest Disney Concert production. Previous editions across the world have included “Star Wars,” “Toy Story,” “Coco,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Lion King.”
