“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has not only topped the Australian box office this past weekend, but it’s also broken a few big records in the process.
Just weeks after “The Odyssey” became 2026’s biggest film in Australia, posting $13.44 million in its opening weekend, the latest Marvel instalment has more than doubled that figure, bringing in $30.4 million and a whopping 1.8 million Australians heading to cinemas around the country between Thursday and Sunday.
With that number, “Brand New Day” is the biggest film this year, and now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend since 2019. It is the second biggest opening weekend of all time in Australia.
According to Sony Pictures, it also is the biggest box office result ever recorded on a Saturday ($9.3 million) and a Sunday ($8.18 million).
“‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has not only created brand new box office records but underscores the fact that going to see movies at the cinema is well & truly back,” Stephen Basil-Jones, Managing Director of Sony Pictures Releasing Australia said.
“It delivered the biggest Saturday ever at the cinemas, the biggest Sunday ever at the cinemas & the biggest opening in Sony Pictures long illustrious 100-year history. This is a win for everyone…fans and audiences of ‘Spider-Man’ are just loving the film, the cinemas that are playing it & the industry at large which is making a big, bold announcement that cinema is back, stronger than ever.”
HOYTS Group President and CEO Damian Keogh added in a separate statement: “We congratulate our partners at Sony Pictures on this outstanding achievement. It’s remarkable to see so many movie fans flock to cinemas to experience Marvel’s latest blockbuster.”

“The Odyssey” is still booming three weeks into its run, posting another $6.2 million for an overall total of just under $40 million, while “Toy Story 5” came in at third place for the weekend box office, earning $612,000.
