Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” became 2026’s biggest film in Australia upon its release, and that domination has continued for a second straight week.
The Universal Pictures-released epic has grossed over $11.45 million, bringing its total to almost $30 million in two weeks. In comparison, Disney’s “Moana” came in at No. 2 at the weekend box office, pulling in over 1.2 million, for an overall haul of nearly $15 million three weeks after its release.
The box office news comes it was revealed that a bootleg of “The Odyssey” reached millions of people on X over the weekend.
At 2:25 p.m. PT, a post on X reading “Someone uploaded ‘The Odyssey’ full movie on X. Can you believe it?” amplified a message from a now-suspended account. The message included a high-quality version of the film, as confirmed by Variety, and climbed to over 2.1 million views within two and a half hours. By that time, the streaming film was replaced by a takedown notice, and then the account was suspended.
Released across 321 locations nationwide, “The Odyssey” has attracted audiences across premium formats including IMAX, 4DX and 70mm presentations, with 16,888 sessions during the film’s first weekend.
The film has also surged past $600 million globally. It’s the best second weekend hold for a movie that opened above $100 million, according to Universal. “The Odyssey” has already surpassed the international haul of this spring’s hit “Project Hail Mary” ($340 million) and now ranks among the top five highest-grossing Hollywood releases of the year — and that’s before opening in major foreign markets including China, Japan and Korea.
Meanwhile, “Toy Story 5” has continued its impressive run at the box office six weeks after its release, coming in at third with almost $1.2 million in sales (bringing its total to $44.2 million), as did “Minions & Monsters” at No. 4, with $744,000 posted and an overall total of $22.5 million five weeks since its local debut.
