The sixth “Scary Movie” dominated the Australian box office this last weekend, grossing over $3 million on debut.
The film, starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and more, kicked off with an impressive $3.71 million for opening weekend (Thursday June 4th-Sunday, June 7th), beating out popular thrillers “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” which grossed $3.08 million and $2.78 million, respectively.
“At its best, the ‘Scary Movie’ school of comedy — like the ‘Naked Gun’ and ‘Airplane!’ school and all the other parodies that have sustained this genre for half a century — makes witty use of exaggeration, blowing up the clichés you didn’t know were there, taking overfamiliar tropes and inflating them into glorious outsize goofs,” Variety wrote in its review of the film.
“What makes a ‘Scary Movie’ sequel hilarious as opposed to merely warmed over? It can be hard to put into words, but you know it when your funny bone feels it. You know it when you laugh out loud.”
Sony’s “Master of the Universe” also debuted in the Australian box office over the weekend, grossing $2.07 million, beating fellow newcomer “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act,” which debuted with $1.98 million.
“Michael,” now in its seventh week, brought it a further $1.65 million, followed by “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” with $1.40 million. “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” in its sixth week, grossed $952,000, followed by “The Sheep Detectices” with $657,000.
“Peddi” rounded out the top ten with $405,000.
