“Marty Supreme”, a gripping drama film starring Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow and more, is coming exclusively to Stan next month.

The film will be available to stream in Australia from May 15th.

Loosely based on Marty “The Needle” Reisman, a real-life US table tennis champ from the 1950s, this propulsive odyssey from Josh Safdie (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” “Uncut Gems”) also stars an ensemble cast including Odessa A’zion, Tyler, the Creator, Kevin O’Leary and Fran Drescher.

The Academy Award-nominated drama follows Marty Mauser (played by Chalamet), who is a narcissistic 1950s New York shoe salesman and aspiring table tennis champion. He scams and hustles his way to professional tournaments, including a pivotal trip to London and Tokyo, exploiting relationships with his uncle, a married friend, and socialites to fund his obsession with becoming the best.

The film became A24’s best performing Australian opening yet in the box office, grossing over AU$4.1 million in its first weekend. Chalamet went on to win a Golden Glove for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and the film received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, but walked away empty handed. It also received 11 BAFTA nominations, but again won nothing.

Variety’s Peter Debruge said in a review, “it’s both mesmerizing and maddening to watch this arrogant table-tennis prodigy ricochet from high to low for nearly two and a half hours.

“In the defining performance of his still-burgeoning career, Timothée Chalamet — aka ‘Marty Supreme’ — makes you want to believe in this instantly iconic character too … even if sometimes you also want to strangle him.”
