Nine’s streaming service Stan will release a three-part documentary series into mushroom murderer Erin Patterson, examining the infamous small town lunch and uncovering the impact of global media furore.
During a planned lunch on July 29, 2023, Patterson intentionally poisoned four of her relatives with highly toxic death cap mushrooms. Three of the four guests died within three days – her in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson. Heather’s husband Ian survived the poisoning despite serious hospitalisation.
On July 7, 2025, a jury in the Supreme Court of Victoria convicted Patterson of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. The case sparked significant local and international media interest, including the BBC, AAP, Guardian and more.
Part one of “Revealed – Death Cap Murders” will premiere on September 14, led by journalists John Silvester and Marta Pascual Juanola from The Age, alongside interviews with doctors, psychologists, local residents, mushroom poison experts, and Patterson’s former colleagues and classmates.
It will delve beyond the headlines, uncovering new details, untold perspectives, and deeper truths not yet part of the public conversation. The documentary will expose the hidden layers and lasting consequences of Victoria’s most infamous tragedy.
It will also examine the impact of the global media, exploring the limitations of truth, justice, and motive in a case where the only question is “Why?”

“Revealed – Death Cap Murders” is directed by Emmy-nominated Gil Marsden, with executive producers Alicia Brown and Cailah Scobie. It’s co-produced by Dreamchaser, Den of Martians and FIFTH SEASON, with major production investment from Screen Australia and was financed in association with VicScreen.
Marsden said that from his first day in town, the community’s grief was profound.
“While the tragedy and trial drew global attention, our goal was to create a respectful, honest portrait of this surreal experience. It was both a challenge and a privilege to tell such a complex story – piece by piece, heartbreak by heartbreak. We remember and honour the victims, and thank everyone who contributed to telling this story,” he said.
