Tropfest will make its triumphant return next year after a decade away, and it has been boosted by the announcement that Australia’s own Margot Robbie will serve as Jury President.
Taking place at Sydney’s Centennial Park on Sunday, February 22, Australian and New Zealand filmmakers will be able to showcase their works on the big screen and globally on the livestreaming Tropfest YouTube channel.
“Tropfest has long been an important launchpad for filmmakers,” Robbie said.
“It’s where creativity meets opportunity, and I’m incredibly excited to help celebrate and support the next wave of storytellers.”
Filmmakers will compete for a share of $100,000 through the newly-established CommBank Tropfest Emerging Filmmakers Fund, created to champion the next generation of Australian storytellers. The first, second and third prizes will be valued at $50,000, $30,000, and $20,000, respectively.
Returning to its roots, filmmakers must create a brand-new short film that includes the iconic “Tropfest Signature Item” — which this year is an hourglass. Finalist films will be selected from an anticipated hundreds of entries to have their world premiere at the free event.
From December 1st, Tropfest entrants will be able to submit via YouTube. Entries close on January 7th.
