Zendaya is taking her talents to the swamp.
The mononymous, in-demand actor has joined “Shrek 5” as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz).
Universal and DreamWorks, the studios behind the animated adventure set in the land of Far, Far Away, released a teaser along with the updated casting news. In the clip, Shrek’s trustee sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) asks: “Hey Magic Mirror, who’s the fairest of them all?”
Magic Mirror, you know, the one from “Snow White,” responds: “Why Shrek! Of course.”
But this Magic Mirror appears to have a distinctly 21st century twist, allowing the green ogre to swap between various Gen Z-ified looks at Shrek. This prompts very different reactions from Felicia (“Ew, dad!”) and Fiona (“Oooh, Mommy like”) as Shrek raises the question of the hour: “Who is making this stuff?” Just then, Pinocchio pops up to tell a nose-growing lie, declaring “Not me!”
Back in 2017, Zendaya tweeted, “I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood.” Celebrating the news of her casting, Shrek’s official social media accounts reposted her tweet and wrote, “This aged well.”
“Shrek 5” will be released in theaters on Dec. 23, 2026, a quarter-century after the original animated smash was released on the big screen. “Shrek,” which puts a spin on the idea of Happily Ever After through the lens of a misunderstood ogre and his ragtag group of roguish fairytale folk, became an instant hit with nearly $500 million at the global box office, as well as the first-ever Oscar winner for animated feature. The film inspired three sequels — 2004’s “Shrek 2,” 2007’s “Shrek the Third” and 2010’s “Shrek Forever After” — as well as the “Puss in Boots” spinoff series.
Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, veterans of the franchise, are directing the fifth installment. Dohrn worked on the second and third “Shrek” movies as a writer and artist and “Shrek 4” as head of story and voice of Rumpelstilskin. Vernon directed “Shrek 2” and voices Gingerbread Man.
Zendaya, an Emmy winner for “Euphoria,” has a busy upcoming schedule that includes Christopher Nolan’s star-studded “The Odyssey,” the fourth “Spider-Man” installment with Tom Holland and “Euphoria” Season 3. Her recent credits include Luca Guadagnino’s tennis love triangle drama “Challengers” and Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Two.”
