So, let’s get into it! These are the series and movies you have to see ahead of the 2024 Emmys, informed by Variety Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis and the content experts at Fetch.

“Hacks”

Category prediction: Comedy Series
Where to watch: Stream on Stan on Fetch

Year after year, contenders in the Comedy Series category get better and better. Luckily for ‘Hacks’, each season is following a similar trajectory. The show is centred around the unlikely partnership between legendary comedian Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart) and a young, disgraced comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Its third season is ranked highly for predicted Emmy nominations, particularly for its sharp writing and insightful exploration of mentorship, reinvention and comedy.

“The Crown”

Category prediction: Drama Series
Where to watch: Stream on Netflix on Fetch

With a parade of past nominations and wins under its belt, ‘The Crown’ continues to reign supreme with its latest season, offering a compelling depiction of the British royal family from 1997 to 2005. The show’s intricate storytelling and superb acting have made it a staple at the Emmys – this latest season, following the tragedy and aftermath of Princess Diana’s death, is a must-watch.

“Red, White and Royal Blue”

Category prediction: Television Movie
Where to watch: Stream on Prime Video on Fetch

A book adaptation and romantic comedy that has captured hearts worldwide. Matthew López’s ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ is predicted to bring some queer representation to the 2024 Emmys. The film follows the love story between the Prince of Wales (played by Nicholas Galitzine) and the First Son of the United States (Taylor Zakhar Perez), while they navigate the complexities of their public lives and private desires.

“Lessons in Chemistry”

Category prediction: Limited Series
Where to watch: Stream on Apple TV+ on Fetch.

Another best-selling novel turned into a miniseries. Set in the early 1960s, ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ stars Brie Larson as a chemist who has her life changed forever after getting pregnant and being dismissed from her lab job. Its sharp commentary on sexism and self discovery make it a strong contender for the Limited Series category.

Donald Glover in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”

Category prediction: Lead Actor Drama
Where to watch: Stream on Prime Video on Fetch.

When a TV adaptation of the globally recognised film dropped online, we had high expectations. But Mr. & Mrs Smith has been widely praised, particularly Donald Glover’s performance. His dynamic portrayal of a spy entangled in undercover missions and a dramatic love life is expected to earn him a nod for Lead Actor in a Drama. Does he stack up to Brad Pitt’s original? You’ll have to watch and see.

Jennifer Aniston & Reese Witherspoon in “The Morning Show”

Category prediction: Lead Actress Drama
Where to watch: Stream on Apple TV+ on Fetch

It’s no surprise, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s powerhouse performances in the third season of ‘The Morning Show’ continue to captivate audiences. So much so, they’re both picked in Variety’s rankings, following nominations in past years. Both Aniston and Witherspoon are absolute pros. Their portrayals of morning show anchors dealing with industry challenges and personal dramas has set the stage for Emmy recognition.

“Baby Reindeer”

Category prediction: Writing (Limited TV/Movie)
Where to watch: Stream on Netflix on Fetch

If you’ve been to the proverbial watercooler lately, you’ll have heard about Baby Reindeer. The dark comedy miniseries is Variety’s top pick for nomination predictions, thanks to its compelling writing and storytelling. Richard Gadd, who created and starred in the show, is expected to take home accolades for this intense narrative based on his own real life experiences.
