A five-part documentary series about Sydney dance and performing arts institution Brent Street, titled “Dance Life”, will hit Amazon’s Prime Video in 2023.

The new series was part of the streaming giant’s announcement of six new productions, taking its total local output for 2023 to nine new titles.

“Dance Life” is shooting now, with production from Amazon Studios, EQ Media, Biscuit Tin Productions and Creative Bubble Productions.

Prime Video said the series will give audiences a deeply personal look at the people within the institution which produces “the vast majority of Australia’s working commercial dancers”.

It will follow a group of students who have “given up everything” to navigate their dream of becoming professional dancers and performers.

Tyler Bern, head of content at Prime Video Australia, New Zealand and Canada, said Prime Video is committed to supporting diverse Australian content and bringing its customers unexplored stories.

“‘Dance Life’ is another fascinating Australian series, taking us inside the world of would-be professional dancers as they face the highest stakes moments of their dance careers to date. The show is engaging, emotional and entertaining throughout, as we become immersed in a world that very few would ever have been exposed to.”0

David Alrich, EQ Media executive producer, noted the gravity and responsibility of telling this story.

“There is so much incredible Australian content being created at the moment and we’re thrilled that this documentary will be enjoyed by the Prime Video customers. We felt such an obligation to do justice to the stories of these incredibly talented performers and showcase not only their devotion to their craft, but also the amazing emotional journey they go on in their quest to fulfil their dreams,” he said.

The show was created and produced by Jade Barnes and Luke Cornish.

Cornish, who also writes, directs and is one of the executive producers, said: “‘Dance Life’ explores how an individual’s past, both positive and negative, can shape their future. The five-part series explores how a person’s character can pave a path to success, or just as equally, undermine opportunity – and in some cases, destroy it. We’ve seen how these inspiring and aspiring professional dancers handle the pressure, rejection, injuries and success that fill their make-0r-break year. It’s going to be an emotional ride.”

“Dance Life” will be available to Prime Video customers in Australia and over 240 countries and territories worldwide in 2023.
