Nine will dramatise the life of the late Australian cricket great Shane Warne in 2023 in a two-part drama event titled “Warnie”.

The network said it will be a “fitting tribute to one of the greatest Australians of all time”.

“Shane Warne was an Aussie legend, a cultural icon, a cricketing genius, a charmer and a rogue,” the network said in publicity ahead of its 2023 Upfronts event in Sydney.

“Warnie transcended cricket. Like all great characters, he inspired extreme reactions from people from all walks of life, in Australia and around the world.”

The announcement didn’t include any casting details, but did reveal the production would be produced by Screentime, a Banjay company, in association with Vic Screen.

Warne passed away in March this year while on holiday in Thailand.

At Nine’s Upfront event, the broadcaster also unveiled a significant shake-up to its streaming platform 9Now, indicating it is shifting towards being a digital-first broadcaster instead of its traditional focus on linear television.

It also made a number of other programming announcements including a new drama series “Human Error”, a special event series “Australia’s Most Identical”, a new reality competition format “The Summit” and a local version of “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars”.
