Fresh off her Emmy nomination for the second season of “Beef,” Carey Mulligan has joined the cast of Focus Features’ “The Bell Jar.”
The project will mark the film acting debut of global pop star Billie Eilish. While the studio has not formally announced the project, sources told Variety that Mulligan will play Mrs. Greenwood — mother to Eilish’s protagonist Esther Greenwood in the adaptation of the famed Sylvia Plath novel. Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”) will direct.
Reps for Focus and Mulligan had no immediate comment on the matter. Plan B, Studiocanal and Joy Coalition are producing the project, which is also rumored to include “Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie in its ensemble.
Mulligan is a three-time Oscar nominee for her acclaimed work in the films “An Education,” “Promising Young Woman” and Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Opposite Oscar Isaac, Mulligan earned praise for her withering performance this year in the second season of Lee Sung Jin’s second season of “Beef” at Netflix. She was also recently nominated by BAFTA for best supporting actress for another Focus title, “The Ballad of Wallis Island.”
Additional film credits include “Saltburn,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” “Suffragette,” “Mudbound” and “She Said.” Mulligan is repped by Julian Belfrage, CAA, and Jackoway Austen.
