The Australian adaptation of “Ghosts” is heading to British audiences, with the BBC acquiring the local remake to air alongside the original UK series and its hit US counterpart.

The eight-episode comedy, produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia in association with Monumental Television, is set to premiere on the BBC later this year after its Australian debut on Network 10 and Paramount+. The acquisition further expands the global footprint of the franchise, which has already been successfully adapted in multiple territories.

The Australian version follows Kate and Sean, a young couple who inherit a sprawling country mansion only to discover it’s inhabited by an eclectic collection of ghosts from different eras of Australian history. After a near-death experience leaves Kate able to see and communicate with the spirits, the pair attempt to turn the property into a boutique hotel while navigating their supernatural housemates.

The series stars Tamala Shelton and Rowan Witt, alongside Mandy McElhinney, Brent Hill, Michelle Brasier, George Zhao, Ines English and Jackson Tozer.

The adaptation is led by executive producers Sophia Zachariou and Josh Mapleston, with writing contributions from Libby Butler, Philip Denson, Shontell Ketchell, Steph Tisdell and Mapleston. Episodes are directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren and Madeleine Dyer.

“It’s a thrill that ‘Ghosts Australia’ will now have a home on the BBC alongside the original UK series,” said BBC Studios Productions Australia executive producer Sophia Zachariou.

“While we’ve given the show a distinctly Australian flavour, it’s stayed true to the warmth, humour and heart that made ‘Ghosts’ such a global phenomenon. We can’t wait for UK audiences to meet our wonderfully chaotic collection of Australian ghosts.”
