Australian crime comedy drama “Deadloch” Season 2 has just been released on Prime Video. Season 1 saw global success, winning five AACTA Awards in 2024 and reaching Prime Video’s Top 10 TV Shows list in over 165 countries and territories, including the UK, U.S., and Canada.

This season sees Dulcie Collins (Kate Box) and Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami) work a case in the ‘Top End’. The shift in location sees the pair embrace even more Australian culture, including the introduction of a crocodile caravan park and a new character played by Luke Hemsworth (Jason Wade).

Box, Sami and Hemsworth tell Variety Australia the key to seeing Australian shows find success globally — “Colin From Accounts” is another homegrown international hit — is for creators and writers to embrace what makes Australia unique. This means stepping away from any vague locations and leaning into the Australian sense of humour.

“Remain specific,” Box says. “And keep investigating place and character in deep ways, I think, to ignore the place that you’re writing from, I think ultimately makes a show less interesting… the beautiful thing about ‘Deadloch’ is that it could be nowhere but our world.”

Sami agrees, saying “Deadloch” has “cultural specificity” which makes the TV show really shine. “The Irish do it so well. The Irish are like, ‘feck it you know, I’m just going to tell stories about me old man and a sheep on a rock’… consequently, we love Irish film, we get the comedy, we get their sense of humour,” the actor says. “The Kates [creators McCartney and McLennan] are so good at putting Australian culture on screen.”

She adds that in a world where we can feel overwhelmed by content — whether that’s streaming shows, watching TikTok or heading to the cinema — it takes something different to make viewers click.

“When I’m trying to find something to watch… there’s so much of it, so to be specific and capture a sort of… like this season in the Top End or Season 1 in Tasmania, I think that really connects to people,” Sami says. “It cuts through.”

Hemsworth says the reason for the show’s success can also come down to how unapologetic it is. “It’s super unique, too, right?” he notes. “There’s nothing else like it out there. It’s unique, it’s iconic, and it’s irreverent, disgusting, offensive and beautiful.”
