In a powerful two-part investigation, ABC’s “Four Corners” will examine the Bondi massacre, the terror attack that shook Sydney and reignited Australia’s debate over gun control and security.
The first episode, titled “Bondi: Light Over Darkness”, will see reporter Mark Willacy deliver what the ABC is calling “the definitive account” of the tragic events that unfolded that December day.
Drawing on firsthand testimony and verified evidence, the program pieces together the most complete picture yet of the attack, examining not only what happened, but how the tragedy has left enduring scars on the Australian psyche. It also asks what must now be done to prevent it from happening again.
Survivors recount, in harrowing detail, the moments that changed their lives forever, while families of those killed share their grief, anger, and tribute to their loved ones.
On December 14th, two alleged gunman killed 15 people in a mass shooting targeting Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah. One shooter, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, died on the scene. The second, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, was charged after waking from a coma in a Sydney hospital. The charges include one count of murder for each fatality, one count of committing a terrorist act, and 40 counts of causing harm with intent to murder.
The attack marked the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996, when 35 people were killed in Port Arthur, Tasmania. Following that attack, Australia introduced some of the strictest gun control laws in the world.

NSW has once again tightened its gun laws, while the Federal Government has ordered a review into Australia’s federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies, after it was revealed Naveed Akram first came to the attention of ASIO in 2019.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also announced a Royal Commission into Antisemitism.
