Amazon has revealed new details about its upcoming TV adaptation of the PlayStation franchise “God of War”, its next major video game series following 2024’s “Fallout” (and not to be confused with the recently announced “Wolfenstein” adaptation).

The show will focus on the newer era of the “God of War” games, which began in 2018. This part of the series follows Kratos, a former Spartan warrior turned god. as he tries to live a quiet life with his son, Atreus. But their journey for peace draws the attention of Odin and the Norse gods, setting off a new mythological conflict.

This is the second major chapter in the franchise. The earlier games, released between 2005 and 2015, told Kratos’ original story and his brutal war against the gods of Greek mythology.

The series will be led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica”, “Outlander”) and will include input from Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog. The news was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con and expanded on in an interview with IGN.

Speaking to Collider, showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed that the first season of Amazon’s God of War series will adapt the 2018 game across ten episodes.

“We’re in the scripts phase. We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into. I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.”

Moore praised God of War creative director Cory Barlog for building that world.

“Cory Barlog is a genius. That’s not a word I throw around very much, but I’ve had several meetings with Cory, and you ask Cory, ‘Well, tell me about the backstory of this or how this works,’ and he just can talk because he holds it all in his head.”

In a separate interview with IGN, Moore shared that while he couldn’t reveal too much yet, the series will closely follow the tone and storytelling approach of “God of War” (2018) and its sequel “God of War: Ragnarök.”

Moore said the series will reflect the emotional core of God of War (2018), describing it as “an epic journey” grounded in a father-son relationship.

“This heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother. So it has this emotional heart, but there’s this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he’s going through.”

While full production isn’t expected to begin until at least 2026, the project appears to be back on track after some creative reshuffling in 2024. With its strong narrative foundation and cinematic legacy, “God of War” is shaping up to be Amazon’s next major gaming adaptation.
