Sarah Michelle Gellar is having a full-circle horror moment — and she’s bringing The Fisherman along for the ride.
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star leads Uber One’s latest campaign, reuniting onscreen with the iconic slicker-wearing killer who originally ended her run as Helen Shivers in 1997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The ad drops just as Gellar’s surprise appearance in Sony Pictures’ new chapter of the franchise has fans buzzing.
Shot during a recent family stay in Sydney, the Uber One collaboration came together while Gellar was living in Rose Bay, where her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. was filming the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” instalment.
“We were living in Rose Bay and we didn’t have a car, we literally Ubered everywhere and ordered Uber Eats constantly,” Gellar says. “We had our favourite coffee shop and would Uber Eats it every single day. So, when Uber One approached me for this campaign, they actually showed me how much I would’ve saved if I’d been an Uber One member during our stay. You’ll see in the ad… it was a lot.”
The campaign also ties in with Uber One’s partnership with HOYTS, offering perks for members including discounted tickets ($12.50 for general admission, $27.50 for HOYTS LUX) and unlimited free popcorn refills.
“Revisiting my horror roots has been really unexpected,” Gellar says. “Sitting on a couch with The Fisherman was definitely not on my bingo card, but it’s been an amazing trip down memory lane and I hope fans feel the same.”
Despite previously shutting down any return to the series due to her character’s death, Gellar now cheekily clarifies: “I wasn’t lying — I’m back, but I’m still dead. The film’s director, and my good friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, was determined to bring Helen Shivers back, and I’m glad she found a way to make it work.”
The actress also made the most of her time in Australia, ticking off a few travel goals, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb with her son. “My husband and daughter stayed firmly on the ground, they’re both terrified of heights, but my son and I went all the way up, and the views were unforgettable,” she says. “Honestly, I think I’m more of a Sydney girl than a Melbourne one.”
Gellar joins a growing list of stars fronting Uber One campaigns, following appearances by Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams and “Happy Gilmore” star Chris McDonald.
Uber One’s cinema perks are available exclusively through HOYTS locations nationwide. Online surcharges and booking fees may apply.
