The winners of the 2024 Sydney Theatre Awards have been revealed this week.
Taking place at Sydney’s York Theatre on Monday, January 20th, 16 productions played on local stages last year shared 28 awards presented in front of the near-500 attendees.
The big award of the night – Best Mainstage Production was won by Belvoir’s August: Osage County, which also took out the Best Direction of a Mainstage Production category for Eamon Flack, and Best Performance in a Leading Role in a Mainstage Production for both Tamsin Carroll and Pamela Rabe.
Best Independent Production went to The Inheritance from Shane Anthony, Daniel Cottier Productions, Sugary Rum Productions and Seymour Centre, which was also awarded Best Direction of an Independent Production (Shane Anthony) and Best Ensemble Cast.
The award for Best Musical was won by Hayes Theatre Co’s Zombie! The Musical, while its director, Darren Yap, picked up the gong for Best Direction of a Musical.
The night, hosted by Marney McQueen, also saw theatre and opera director Jim Sharman honoured with the Award for Lifetime Achievement.
After graduating from NIDA in 1966, Sharman has since worked on over 70 productions in his illustrious career, which includes directing three of the most famous rock musicals – Hair in 1969, Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972, and The Rocky Horror Show in 1973.
Sharman also co-wrote the screenplay of the iconic 1975 Rocky Horror Show film and directed the loosely-based sequel, Shock Treatment.
