Netflix has renewed basketball comedy “Running Point” for a third season.

The series stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, whose appointment as president of the Los Angeles Waves after her brother Cam (Justin Theroux) steps down to attend rehab shocks the NBA. The official description for Season 2, which premiered in April, says that “what she doesn’t know is that Cam is quietly manoeuvring behind the scenes to reclaim his post, turning every misstep into ammunition. As she tries to balance the pressure of running a franchise with devoting time to her personal life, every decision on and off the court counts. To survive the family power plays and the scrutiny of the board, she’ll have to rip up last season’s game plan and come up with a whole new playbook if she wants to close out the season on top.”

Along with Hudson and Theroux, the cast of “Running Point” includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman, Uche Agada and Jay Ellis.

“Running Point” is written by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, with Stassen serving as showrunner. All three executive produce alongside Hudson, Howard Klein, Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis. Kaling International produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling is under an overall deal. The series is one of several at Netflix that is produced in Los Angeles, joining “Beef” Season 2, “The Hawk,” “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story,” “Nobody Wants This” Season 3, “The Lincoln Lawyer” Season 5, “A Man on the Inside” Season 3, “Forever” Season 2 and the film “Animals.”

The Season 3 renewal of “Running Point” was announced out of Netflix’s presentation to ad buyers at upfronts in New York City.
