Legendary Hollywood collaborators Ben Affleck (“The Accountant 2”) and Matt Damon (“Oppenheimer”) are reuniting on-screen once again for Netflix action-thriller “The Rip.” Inspired by true events, the film stars Affleck and Damon as Miami cops who take part in a bust that uncovers a stash of $24 million and decide to keep it for themselves. As outside forces, including criminals and other cops, learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.
“The Rip” is written and directed by Joe Carnahan (“Boss Level”), who told TUDUM the film was inspired by a “deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department.” Carnahan developed the story alongside screenwriter Michael McGrale (“The Following).
Carnahan stated the film was also inspired by his “enduring love for those classic ‘70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like “Serpico” and “Prince of The City” and more recently, Michael Mann’s “Heat”.”
“The Rip” also stars Steven Yeun (“Invincible”), Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”), Sasha Calle (“The Flash”), Catalina Sandino Moreno (“Ballerina”), Scott Adkins (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) and Kyle Chandler (“Argo”).
The film is produced by Artists Equity, the studio founded by Damon and Affleck in 2002. The pair, friends since their university days, first found success as collaborators with “Good Will Hunting,” but have largely acted independently, though remaining close friends. Carnahan praised them as filmmaking partners, telling TUDUM, “I’ve never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.”
“The Rip” will release on Netflix on Friday, January 16. Watch the trailer below.
