“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” has been canceled after two seasons at Netflix.
The reality dating series was part of Netflix’s “Ultimatum” franchise, which began with “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” in April 2022. The original series is still ongoing, having been renewed for a fourth season earlier this year. Netflix has also released French and South African seasons of “The Ultimatum.”
Both “Marry or Move On” and “Queer Love” follow five to six couples per season, with the couples in “Queer Love” being made up of all women and non-binary people. In each couple, one partner is ready for marriage and issues an ultimatum to the other. The cast members separate from their partners and date around for a week before choosing someone from another couple to enter a three-week “trial marriage” with. Then, they reunite with their original partners for another three weeks. Each cast member must decide at the end of the season whether to pursue marriage with their original partner, go back to their trial spouse or leave alone.
Season 1 of “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” premiered in May 2024 and spent two weeks on the Netflix Top 10. Season 2 premiered in June of this year and did not make the global Top 10, though it did reach five countries’ individual charts.
“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” was created by Chris Coelen, who executive produces via his production company Kinetic Content. Besides “The Ultimatum,” Coelen and the company are best known for the “Love Is Blind” franchise and “Perfect Match,” which are ongoing at Netflix, as well as “Married at First Sight,” which ran on A&E’s FYI network for its first four seasons before moving to Lifetime through Season 18 and Peacock for the upcoming 19th season.
