Famed The Police guitarist Andy Summers is launching a new docuseries that explores his signature instrument around the world. “Global Guitar” is an eight-part unscripted series where Summers will travel to various countries and learn how different cultures embrace the guitar.
Envisioned as a multi-season franchise, “Global Guitar” will follow Summers on this worldly odyssey as he becomes more acquainted with the instrument and its global impact. In addition to showcasing music from around the world, the production will capture Summers’ interactions with local musicians, learning more about the cultures through their common love for the instrument.
“This comes from a deeply authentic and personal space – an extension of something I’ve been doing my entire adult life,” Summers said in a statement. I’ve always been interested in the music of other cultures, and the guitar in particular. It is absolutely the preeminent instrument in the world. Every culture has accessed it and made something of their own of it. It’s a very evolving instrument that just never seems to stop.”
The series is executive produced by Summers and produced by Bill Borden (“High School Musical”) and Mark Dziak (“Big Brother,” “Race To The Center of the Earth”). Together, they bring their backgrounds in music, travel and reality television to “Global Guitar.”
“We believe in the project and in Andy’s authentic vision,” Borden said. “This is a series that we feel needs to be made – something that has not made it to screen the way we are approaching it. We are confident it will find its way to interested audiences around the globe.”
Todd Barasch and Christina Calio are handling distribution for the series, which will be presented to potential buyers at MIPCOM this October. The project aims to begin filming in February and March next year.
