Neil Patrick Harris will host a new game show for Netflix titled “What’s in the Box,” which the streamer describes as a “massive guessing game” where each decision could lead to “life-changing rewards.” The series will premiere sometime in December.
The format consists of giant boxes concealing “jaw-dropping” prizes. Pairs of contestants will face off in fast-paced trivia rounds, guessing what’s inside of each box. But, per Netflix, “winning a prize is just the beginning. As the game unfolds, shifting alliances and unexpected twists mean only those with sharp instincts — and a little luck — will hold onto their winnings and claim victory.”
Netflix has ordered six 45-minute episodes of “What’s in the Box,” which produced by Rollercoaster Television (part of ITV Studios). The executive producers are James Fox, Dom Waugh, Wes Kauble and Leanne Witcoop.
Harris is a five-time Emmy Award winner who is best known for playing Barney Stinson on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” and the title character of ABC’s “Doogie Howser, M.D.” For Netflix, he portrayed the villainous Count Olaf in the television adaptation of “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” And on Broadway, he won a Tony for his lead performance in the rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” His other memorable roles include “Gone Girl,” a guest spot on “Glee” and the “Harold & Kumar” film series, in which he played a fictional version of himself.
As for his hosting stints, he previously anchored the NBC game show “Genius Junior” and has MCed a bunch of award shows, including the Tonys, Emmys and Oscars.
“What’s in the Box” joins Netflix’s slate of competition series including “Is It Cake?,” “The Circle,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” “Million Dollar Secret,” “Star Search” and more.
