Comedian and “The Daily Show” host/correspondent Ronny Chieng has joined the cast of Hulu’s upcoming “King of the Hill” revival, taking over as the voice of fan-favorite character Kahn Souphanousinphone.
Chieng joins the show as a recurring guest star when “King of the Hill” returns for a long-awaited Season 14, with ten episodes set to bow Aug. 4 on Hulu. He assumes the gig from Toby Huss, who previously voiced Kahn through the show’s first 13 seasons, from 1997 to 2009. In the revival, Huss has now moved over to voice Dale Gribble starting with Episode 7, tapping in to replace the late Johnny Hardwick.
Kahn is married to Minh and father to Connie (both of whom are voiced by the returning Lauren Tom). As the “King of the Hill” synopsis notes, “Kahn is Hank’s Laotian neighbor who lives with his wife Minh. Khan is arrogant and has maintained his superiority complex towards his Arlen neighbors. He is ultra-competitive and often butts heads with Hank as he attempts to “win” at life. He loves his daughter Connie, but tries to control her life and thinks she is too good to associate with Bobby Hill.”
Chieng actually let his casting slip in December while recording a podcast with Ari Shaffir, but the news hadn’t gone wide until now. Besides “The Daily Show,” the busy star’s most recent Netflix special, “Ronny Chieng: Love to Hate It,” was named best comedy special of 2024 by the New York Times. He was in the films “Crazy Rich Asians,” “M3GAN” and “Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and his TV credits include “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” “American Born Chinese,” “Young Rock” and “Interior Chinatown.” He’ll next be seen in the Peacock series “The Miniature Wife.”
The Season 14 cast of “King of the Hill” includes Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Johnny Hardwick, Stephen Root, Lauren Tom and Toby Huss. The 20th TV Animation series comes from exec producers including original co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, and incoming executive producer and showrunner Saladin Patterson.
Here’s the logline for the series return: “After years working a propane job in Saudi Arabia to earn their retirement nest egg, Hank and Peggy Hill return to a changed Arlen, Texas to reconnect with old friends Dale, Boomhauer and Bill. Meanwhile, Bobby is living his dream as a chef in Dallas and enjoying his 20s with his former classmates Connie, Joseph and Chane.”
