A PSA for L.A.-area e-scooters and food delivery robots: “Platonic” is coming back. Apple TV has renewed the series, starring and executive produced by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, for a Season 3. The streamer announced the news on Friday morning.
Sony Pictures Television is the studio behind “Platonic,” which is exec produced and co-created by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco. The show, which first premiered in May 2023, stars Byrne as Sylvia and Rogen as Will, two former best friends who had a rift and drifted apart. When Will gets divorced and needs a pal to pick him up, he reconnects — platonically — with Sylvia, who is also at a stage in life where her three kids are getting older and she’s looking for a new life path. (Among Will’s quirks: Kicking over every e-scooter and traveling delivery robot he sees on the streets of Los Angeles.)
Luke Macfarlane plays Sylvia’s husband, Charlie, who at first is confused by Sylvia’s friendship with Will — but then goes through a bit of his own midlife crisis in Season 2, which premiered this August. The show’s cast also includes Carla Gallo as Sylvia’s friend Katie, while guest stars included Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett and Milo Manheim.
“‘Platonic’ is proof there is no duo better at making us belly laugh at mid life crises than Seth and Rose,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV. “Nick and Francesca accomplished the rare feat of taking the show to the next level in season two, and, along with our partners at Sony, we can’t wait to see what they cook up for season three.”
Stoller’s Global Solutions, which has an overall deal at Sony, also produces. Byrne, Stoller, Delbanco and Conor Welch executive produce, along with Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver for Point Grey Pictures.
Both Rogen and Byrne are multitaskers at Apple TV. Rogen also stars, writes, directs and executive produces (with Goldberg) the streamer’s Emmy-winning comedy “The Studio,” while Byrne’s additional Apple TV work includes the series “Physical.”
