In a surprise victory, “Somebody Somewhere” star Jeff Hiller has won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy at the Sunday night ceremony.

“I feel like I’m going to cry, because for the past 25 years I have been like, world, I want to be an actor! And the world was like, maybe computers,” Hiller said in his speech.

“I just want to say thank you to HBO for putting a show about sweaty middle-aged people on the same network as the sexy teens of ‘Euphoria,” Hiller continued. “Thank you to the Duplass brothers for writing a show of connection and love in this time when compassion is seen as a weakness. Thank you to my sweet husband and my family for never laughing at me, and most of all, thank you, Bridget Everett. You changed my life and you told so many people to believe in themselves, and they do.”

Hiller plays Joel, the close friend of Sam (played by Bridget Everett) in the HBO comedy series. He stars along with Everett, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill and Tim Bagley, among others.

Hiller beat out last year’s winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (as “Cousin” Richie Jerimovich on “The Bear”) for the win, as well as fellow nominees Harrison Ford (as Paul on “Shrinking”), Ike Barinholtz (as Sal Saperstein on “The Studio”), Bowen Yang (for his various roles on “Saturday Night Live”), Michael Urie (as Brian on “Shrinking”) and Colman Domingo (as Danny on “Four Seasons”).

This is Hiller’s first Emmy win and first nomination. He was previously nominated in 2022 at the Independent Spirit Awards for best supporting performance in a new scripted series, and was also part of the “Somebody Somewhere” team that won the Peabody Award in 2022.

Hiller’s credits include “American Horror Story: NYC,” “American Horror Stories,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Playing House,” “Nightcap,” “Impastor,” “The Hotwives of Orlando” and other series. In features, he’s been seen in “Lost & Found in Cleveland,” “Set It Up,” “Greta” and others.

Nate Bargatze is the host of the 77th Emmy Awards, which is produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment. The kudocast aired Sunday evening on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
