Musical theatre star Bernadette Peters is set to perform an exclusive Australian show at Brisbane’s Melt Festival.

The Golden Globe winner will travel to the Sunshine State for “An Evening with Bernadette Peters” at the Brisbane Convention Centre on October 24, her first Australian show in over a decade.

Having become a musical theatre megastar with roles in “Into the Woods,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” and “Annie Get Your Gun,” Peters won her Golden Globe in “Pennies for Heaven” before receiving icon status within the LGBTQIA+ community after advocating for AIDS patients and research.

Her work within the community buoyed the importance of her appearance at Melt Festival, which annually celebrates queer art and culture from Brisbane.

It follows recent appearances for Peters on both “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to promote the Broadway season of Stephen Sondheim’s “Old Friends.”

The show pays tribute to the legendary musical theatre composer and lyricist who was honoured as “master of the American musical” by then-President Barack Obama when being presented with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Peters had worked with Sondheim on a number of acclaimed shows and was part of a torrent of tributes that followed his death in November 2021, at the age of 91.

“I am so so sad to lose my friend Steve Sondheim He gave me so much to sing about,” Peters wrote in a post to Twitter. “I loved him dearly and will miss him so much Thank you for all the gifts you gave the world Steve.”

Information regarding tickets for An Evening with Bernadette Peters is yet to be finalised, but fans can sign up for presale here.
