Amazon MGM Studios’ film adaptation of the Colleen Hoover-penned psychological thriller “Verity” will be released wide in theaters on May 15, 2026.
Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva and Brady Wagner star in the movie from director Michael Showalter.
The current script is written by Nick Antosca after previous versions by Hoover and Lauren Levine; Hillary Seitz; Angela LaManna; and Will Honley and April Maguire.
“Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh is hired as a ghostwriter for renowned author Verity Crawford under mysterious circumstances, but her assignment takes a dark turn after discovering chilling autobiographical notes,” the film’s official logline reads. “Faced with a series of deadly family secrets, Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality, while also blurring the lines with Verity’s husband, Jeremy.”
Sources close to the project tell Variety the release date was selected to provide counterprogramming for the male-skewing tentpoles also debuting in May, including “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Hathaway and Hoover are producers, while Johnson, Lauren Levine and Kerry Orent serve as executive producers. Production companies attached to “Verity” are Eat the Cat, Semi-Formal Productions, Shiny Penny, Somewhere Pictures and Heartbones Entertainment.
“Verity” was self-published by Hoover in 2018 and was later acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021. It has spent months on the New York Times Best Sellers list, selling more than one million copies in 2023 alone. The film adaptation follows hot on the heels of “It Ends With Us,” the movie version of Hoover’s other No. 1 bestseller. That film, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, was the sleeper hit of the summer, earning more than $346 million at the worldwide box office.
