Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, the wife of Sir Paul, in the upcoming four-part Beatles biopic by director Sam Mendes.

The four-time Oscar-nominated actor will star alongside Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney. Linda and Paul married in 1969. She worked alongside him as keyboardist and harmony vocalist in his post-Beatles band, Wings. Linda died from cancer in 1998 at the age of 56.

Sony, the studio behind the bold cinematic bet, declined to comment on Ronan’s casting.

As for the rest of the Fab Four, Harrison Dickinson is playing John Lennon, Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison and Barry Keoghan is cast as Ringo Starr. Additional cast members have yet to be announced.

Mendes is making four separate movies, one from each Beatles member’s point of view. To that end, it’s unknown to what extent that Ronan will appear in the other three films. The cinematic quartet will intersect to capture the band’s improbable journey from Liverpool to the center of global culture, leading to their 1970 breakup. The tagline, in other words, is “Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.” All four installments will debut on the big screen in April 2028 in what Sony Pictures is dubbing the “first binge-able theatrical experience.” However the exact release plan is unclear.

McCartney, Starr, and the families of the late Lennon and Harrison have granted full life story and music rights for the scripted films, making these the first features sanctioned by the band.

Ronan broke out in 2007’s “Atonement” and went on to score Academy Award nominations for her performances in “Brooklyn,” and Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” and “Little Woman.” The Irish actor most recently starred in and produced the 2024 indie drama “The Outrun” and led Steve McQueen’s “Blitz.”
