Mark Hamill revealed in a recent interview with The Times of London that he told his wife to choose between moving to London or Ireland after Donald Trump was re-elected U.S. president in November 2024. Several celebrities, from Rosie O’Donnell to Ellen DeGeneres, have left America because of Trump. Hamill wanted to follow suit. He’s always been an outspoken critic of Turmp, be it mocking the president as the Joker or making anti-Trump videos for political organizations. But would Hamill actually leave the U.S.?

After giving his wife the choice between London or Ireland, she gave an answer that forced Hamill to stay put. As the “Star Wars” icon explained: “She’s very clever. She didn’t respond right away but a week later she said, ‘I’m surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country.’ That son of a bitch, I thought. I’m not leaving.”

Hamill is staying in the U.S. for now and added of Trump: “The bullying, the incompetence, the people in place… The only way I can deal with it without going crazy and wanting to open my veins in a warm tub is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political nove. It’s entertaining in a way because this could actually be the end. Our status in the world has been crippled and that will reverberate for decades. Making Canada a 51st state? Do you know how offensive that is? And then taking over Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The distractions are hilarious.”

Hamill would’ve joined Rose O’Donnell in Ireland had his wife picked there to relocate after the election. The television icon previously told Variety she has no regrets about leaving the U.S. and has no plans on returning until it’s safe to do so.

“With the current political climate, when would it be safe to come back with my child?” O’Donnell said. “I’m not going to push it before this administration is completely finished, and hopefully held accountable for their crimes.”

“When you know it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” O’Donnell added on TikTok. She said she is “very grateful” to have found a new home in Ireland, adding that the “people here are so loving, kind and welcoming.”
