PayPal is going big for its latest push in the Australian ad market, enlisting Hollywood A-lister Will Ferrell to promote PayPal’s Pay in 4 service, as first reported by Mediaweek.

In the campaign’s debut, Ferrell commandeers an airline PA system to announce to the plane the system’s perks, which include no interest or late fees on the buy now pay later service.

The comedy icon will be the face of the campaign in its entirety. It will debut in the treasured advertisement slots of the AFL and NRL Grand Finals before spreading across BVOD, Netflix, Amazon, Binge and other major streaming services.

Ferrell is in full form for the campaign, ensuring his signature style of humour is present, seemingly no matter the medium. “Am I gonna make my connection?” one passenger asks in the ad, to which Ferrell replies, “You will, but your luggage won’t,” before mic-dropping the PA and attempting to retreat into an occupied bathroom.

Caitlin Hoey, head of consumer marketing at PayPal Australia, said “This is the largest consumer campaign PayPal has ever run in Australia, and we’re thrilled it features iconic A-list actor, Will Ferrell, whose universal humour resonates across generations.

“He brings unmistakable energy to the creative while shining a spotlight on the benefits of PayPal Pay in 4, a simple BNPL solution that millions of Australians can use with confidence.”

The campaign is the latest work of PayPal Global’s advertising partnership with Publicis Groupe, and is released in time with a refreshed brand identity for the platform, from the logo down to the services.

Putting Ferrell as the face of the campaign is PayPal’s way of cutting through a saturated market of buy now, pay later services, and reminding customers to, as a certain unnamed, moustachioed San Diego news anchor would put it, “stay classy”… when choosing a financial platform.
