Glen Powell gave the briefest of updates regarding “Top Gun 3” during a live interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast alongside his “Twisters” co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones. The actors were asked which project would come first: a “Normal People” continuation with Edgar-Jones or “Top Gun 3” with Powell? The answer was the latter.
“I mean, I have a date,” Powell said, more or less confirming that a start date has been set for him to start work on “Top Gun 3.” Whether that means a start date for getting back in the gym or returning to pilot school or an actual filming start remains to be seen. Powell respsonded “absolutely not” when asked if there were any more “Top Gun 3” details he could share.
News broke in January ahead of Powell appearing at the Sundance Film Festival to screen “Hit Man” that Paramount Pictures was officially developing a third “Top Gun” movie. The plan was for Powell to reunite with his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-stars Tom Cruise and Miles Teller. Powell told Variety at Sundance that when news of the third movie’s development broke online, he started getting a lot of text messages with question marks.
“People looked at me like I knew what was going on,” Powell said before offering a “Top Gun 3” tease: “There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”
Powell starred as Jake “Hangman” Seresin in “Top Gun: Maverick,” which hit theaters in May 2022 and grossed $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office to become the 11th highest grossing movie of all time that summer. “Maverick” currently ranks as 13th biggest film.
As Variety reported in January: “Paramount has tapped ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ co-writer Ehren Kruger to work on a script for a sequel to the action blockbuster, according to a knowledgeable insider. The studio is also hoping that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski will get back into the cockpit for another installment in the series, which would potentially see Cruise’s younger co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell return for more high-altitude excitement. Discussions about the new script began late last year. There’s still a few hurdles to cross, with Cruise and company needing to sign off on a final version.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” stands as Cruise’s biggest film to date. Powell, meanwhile, has kept his own box office fortunes thriving with hits such as the romantic-comedy “Anyone but You” and the disaster film “Twisters,” which just launched at the domestic box office to a huge $81.5 million.
